A practice that extends as far back as a millennia, mankind is no stranger to the habit of tea-drinking. And while the practice may be rich with anecdotal advice, what do you really stand to gain from consuming tea on a regular basis?
Well as it turns out, spilling the tea (and drinking it subsequently) does provide some substantial benefits to your overall health, according to science. That is, if you’re drinking it without any milk and sugar, of course. Here’s what the research says.
1. Drinking green tea could improve brain function
The mother of all health teas, green tea has rightfully earned its place in the health food ranks. While it’s known to be rich in antioxidants, green teas also contain measurable amounts of caffeine and the amino-acid L-theaine to bolster brain function.
L-theaine also increases production of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which can subdue symptoms of anxiety in the brain.
2. Black and green tea can lower your risk of stroke
If you have a strong black or green tea habit, then we have even more good news to share. Research indicates that regardless of age, consuming three or more cups daily can reduce your risk of suffering from a stroke by as much as 21%!
3. Peppermint can help soothe stomach aches
For those suffering from an easily irritable stomach, peppermint tea is a must-have in your pantry. Rich in L-menthol, this specific organic compound has been scientifically shown to calm upset tummies while also soothing cases of constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.
4. Chamomile could reduce menstrual pain
Every woman expects the inescapable inevitability of menstrual pain, all up to the point of menopause. With that being said however, you could reduce the severity of menstrual pain when it happens by consuming chamomile tea over the course of a month. Research has also indicated that it may reduce feelings of anxiety related to menstruation as well.
5. Hibiscus tea may lower blood pressure levels
Flirting between vivid pinks & reds, the hibiscus flower is most commonly recognised as Malaysia’s national flower. But this resplendent national icon also happens to make a delectable tea rich in benefits.
How so? Well, through a number of different studies it has been found that the flower shows a distinct ability to reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However, it’s best not to consume it if you are already on certain blood pressure medications, as it could interact with the efficacy of the drug.
6. White tea contains the highest amount of cancer-fighting antioxidants
Harvested from the Camellia sinensis plant, white tea contains the most amount of antioxidants in commonly consumed teas. As such, research suggests that consuming it regularly could help combat various forms of cancer. It also happens to contain the lowest amount of caffeine, making it more soothing in comparison to its other counterparts.
